Make your own fine art print inspired by form and colour in our Winifred Nicholson exhibition. Opening in October 2024, MIMA presents an exhibition dedicated to artist Winifred Nicholson (1893–1981) and her relationship with the tradition of rag rug making, also known as ‘hooky’ rug mats. The exhibition comprises rag rugs, paintings, and archive material from the 1920s up to the 1980s.

They take inspiration from artists and artworks in MIMA’s artistic programme.

Janice Downs has worked as a Senior Technician Demonstrator in Printmaking, Fine Art at Teesside University for 17 years. Previously she worked at the Northern School of Art and Middlesbrough College in Art and Design and Textiles. Her practice is predominantly based in printmaking and her subject matter of late has concentrated on the red list – a list of endangered birds in the UK.

Take inspiration from objects in MIMA’s Open Access Collection Store and create your own hand painted silk scarf in this evening workshop. Study the forms, shapes and textures of the ceramic and jewellery objects on display to make preparatory sketches which you will paint onto screens and print onto silk.

Vicky Graham has worked as a Senior Technician for 15 years, with a background in textiles and surface design that has developed into a love for all analogue processes, including screen printing, fabric dying, ink making, book binding and hectograph printing.

Thursday 24th October, 17:30-21:00

Draw inspiration from images of industry in the Middlesbrough Collection and make your own vessel or concertina book using rust as your printing medium, in this short course which takes place on Thursday evenings.

Make your own hand-bound sketchbook in this one-day workshop inspired by the Cleveland Art Society. Formerly known as the Cleveland Sketching Club, this artist group are celebrating their 140^th anniversary and presenting work in MIMA's Working Lives exhibition. Spend time in the exhibition making preparatory sketches and learn how to use Coptic and Stitch bookbinding techniques.
